Late on Wednesday, Feb. 15 Congress negotiated an agreement to extend a payroll tax cut to the long-term unemployed, affecting 160 million employed people. The measure also included unemployment benefits for even more.
Sen. Max Baucus (D — Montana), made the announcement late last night after a day of contentious debate over details of the extension. The House of Representatives and Senate will vote on the measure this week, reportedly Friday, just days before they enter recess next week.
The announcement comes after Republicans dropped what Politico has called their “Culture of No” after reported allegations by Democrats of Republicans acting with hostility towards middle class Americans.
